Fitwel (Center for Active Design)
Fitwel, developed by the Center for Active Design (CfAD), is a building certification system that promotes health and well-being through evidence-based design and operational strategies. Created with research from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Fitwel provides a scalable, cost-effective, and flexible approach to improving workplaces, residential buildings, and communities. The system uses a points-based rating (1-3 stars) to assess how well a building supports physical and mental health, productivity, and social equity. Compared to similar certifications like WELL or LEED, Fitwel is known for being more accessible and easier to implement. The Center for Active Design (CfAD), a nonprofit founded in 2012, oversees Fitwel and advances public health through urban planning, architecture, and policy. With growing emphasis on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) goals, Fitwel is widely used by employers, landlords, and developers to create healthier, more sustainable spaces.
